Families in Transition, Part V: Father & Son
“I knew he was going to have some funny shit to say. Or what he thought would be funny.”
Vincent, an L.A.-based DJ, wasn’t thrilled about coming out as a transgender man to his father, John, an English professor in Des Moines, Iowa. But he knew his dad’s penchant for jokes and Italian proverbs would prevent the conversation from being completely awkward. And it wasn’t—more or less. John fully supports the life Vincent has created for himself, though he admits he hasn’t always done a perfect job in doing so.

In their video interview, the two handle a brief moment of conflict as Vincent dispels the notion that being transgender is a “choice.”
